It’s great exercise for the legs, to walk from the small town of Vestone to ‘La casetta nel bosco’, the house in the forest. All sweaty we arrive at the house of Daniela, our AirB&B host. There are great views over the valley and the surrounding nountains. She’s not home, but she left us a note, key and a lantern. Then we continue climbing to a mountain top, where a little shed-house awaits us.
We open the doors and it feels like we stepped back in time. Everything looks so old and cute, yet clean. In the small space we see a couch, a fireplace and a bistro set. The narrow staircase leads to the bedroom with a toilet. No shower, because there is no running water. Outside there is a garden hose bringing water from the stream to a showerhead, allowing us to shower with amazing views over to the mountains. Neither is there electricity in the house, but at night we use the lantern and candles, and of course the burning fire brings light to the room.
Back in time, back to the basics. Just what I needed after not very happy during the months before. We spent most of the time around the house, with one walk to a viewpoint overlooking Lake Idro. When the sun was out, we sat in the sun loungers taking in the views. On rainy days we played games in the cosy living room. We baked little breads in the wood fire, and enjoyed them with Italian cheese. We cooked outside, in one of the old pans that (we found out later) was mostly meant for decoration purposes and impossible to clean again.
We got to meet the local wildlife, just above our bed: there was a family of edible dormice living under the roof. Quiet during the day, very active at night. At first we had no idea where these sounds came from. Then, on the second night, I was so curious that I opened the bedroom door to the garden to check. And there he was: a young dormouse staring at me. And then I saw some other family members. Knowing what was causing the sounds, sleeping was much easier and I actually enjoyed knowing our pets.
