At 6.30 am I leave my house, on a cold winter morning. It’s still dark outside, as dark as it gets in my city. I carry my picnic basket and camera backpack to my car. I pick up my models of today; Maarten Jan and Suzanne. By the time I meet them, my hands are almost frozen to the wheel, it’s freezing cold outside!
45 minutes later we arrive at our destination; a nice heather field in the Dutch national park called Drentsche Aa. By that time, we finally start to see something, for the sun will soon rise above the horizon. Not to our surprise, we meet nobody during our walk. The couple is very good company, despite the very short night they had (and my morning hyperness).
Just before sunrise we arrive in the middle of the heather field. The sand is frozen under out feet, and that’s one of very few sounds we hear. The plants are covered in a thin layer of ice, and the sky colors all shades of purple and orange.
After sunrise, it’s time for a picnic! Hot chocolate at 8.30 am, why not! And then, back home for some more sleep, it’s Sunday after all 😉
